Surgeons need a doctoral or professional degree. They have to go 4 years of undergraduate school and then 4 years of medical school. On top of those 8 years they have 3-8 years in internship and residency programs. There is not any specific major required, all students must complete undergraduate work in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and english. The also need a course in humanities and social sciences. Few medical schools offer combined undergraduate and medical school programs that last 6 or 7 years. During their job, they have to diagnose and treat injuries or illnesses and operate if necessary. They have to take the patient’s medical history and update their charts so nurses and other healthcare staff can perform the necessary treatment on the patient. The must order for the nurse to take test on the patient that review the results to identify unusual findings, the must plan a treatment. They also have to address any concerns or questions the patient may have and help them take care of their health. They work in a sterile environment, the surveys they have may take long periods of time. They usually work in the emergency department at hospitals. They are on call at all times, they could have a couple days of work. Hospitals have on-call rooms so that when they have a break or some time they can catch up on some sleep. Some qualities that they need to have would be compassion, dexterity, leadership, and communication skills. These skills are important because you need to be able to talk to the patient and let them know what is going on and what the best thing they could do for their health. General surgeons cab make up to $367,885 a year (median wage). They have the highest wage of all occupations. All surgeons will not earn that $367,885 right away, their earnings are based on how many years of practice, hours worked, skill, personality, and professional reputation. Surgeons employment is projected to increase 18% from 2012-2022, which is faster than average. Medical Schools are increasing their enrollment on the basis of a perceived higher demand for surgeons.
